Ocelotl Language Navigator Alum’s Spanish translation of the Black Panther Party Museum’s Each One Teach One Exhibit

On Saturday, August 30, 2025, Ocelotl celebrated the work of Valeria Cajero Huidor’s translation of the Each One Teach One exhibit at the Black Panther Party Museum.

We collaborated with Huey P. Newton Foundation’s Executive Director, Xavier Buck, to roll out this project specifically on the anniversary of Fred Hampton’s birthday—honoring the Black Panther who built the Rainbow Coalition uniting Black, Latino, and poor white communities.

It was an auspicious time to open the Spanish translation of the Oakland Community School exhibit, creating inclusion, safety, and possibility for the Spanish-speaking community to connect to the work of the Panthers, specifically in this case, lifting up Number Five of the Black Panthers’ Ten Point Program that speaks to the importance of inclusion and belonging within systems of education:

Young People are the Experts of Their Experience

This is a continuation of the Language Navigators’ work from last year, where they created a translated curriculum for HS International Students to be able to enjoy, comprehend and engage with the material at the Oakland Museum on a field trip experience, created specifically for them to learn more about California History, Indigenous and Xicano cultures in Spanish, when these exhibits were not fully accessible in Spanish.

This exhibit will be up and available for Oakland’s Spanish-speaking community to be included in the opportunity to learn from the transformative work of the Panthers.

Both then and now, it is young people building power into purpose in their (our) community. Our hope for Spanish-speaking students and visitors to the BPP Museum will be able to enjoy, learn, and see themselves in the important work of the Black Panther Party and the preservation of their legacy at the Black Panther Museum.

The panel conversation, led by Xavier Buck, gave a chance for Ocelotl youth alum Valeria Carejo Huidor, Madison Park Academy Principal Tanisha Garrett, Ocelotl ED Robin Noel Morales to share about our shared Power into Purpose in the collaboration of our work in the community.

Our conversation was translated into Spanish by Luis Bibiano, Ocelotl youth alum, current Freshman at College of Alameda. The feeling in the room was vibrant, and we left feeling lifted up, celebrated, and inspired to do MORE.

Praises to All of our people and our community. The ones who showed up for the opening on a beautiful, busy long weekend to offer their time and support. To the young people and allies who stepped into their leadership to share their knowledge and say what needs to be said.

To the people who needed to stay home with their families and who do NOT currently feel safe to move easily into new spaces or environments, while their rights and freedoms are under attack. We see you. And we understand.
